Chic-A-Bow-Wow!

So I go to the movies the other night to see "Breach" (good movie by the way). I pull into a parking space and turn off the car. I go to open my door and notice a couple going for it in the back seat of the car next to me. Chic-A-Bow-Wow! This time, unlike the time in Atlantic City where I pulled away and found another space, I didn't feel like moving. Hey if they have a problem with it, screw them (pun intended).

And now I'd like to end this chic-a-bow-wow post with a little nugget from the Tyra Show which, as I mentioned before, I occasionally watch.

Black History Month

I'm sorry I'm just getting around to posting this, but I've been thinking about this all month and wanted to make sure I worded it just right.

My friends who have known me for a while know that for years I would stress the whole "Black History Month" thing and would even have them research black history facts to "educate" each other. Well, I've kind of soured on the whole thing.

I feel like the whole idea of Black History Month makes us seem like some sort of special race. I don't mean special in a good way. I mean special in that all of our accomplishments have to be pointed out only during some special time of the year. And I think that it separates us from other races. At what point does "Black History" become just "History" without the implied asterisk.

Now don't get me wrong. I appreciate everything that my ancestors did. The struggles for freedom, the many important inventions, opening the doors for an average Joe. . . no . . . an average Tyrone like me to be able to express my opinions openly. This is just something that I've always had in the back of my head. Until recently, when I heard someone else mention the same thing, I thought I was the only one.

So that's the explanation Lori. And I'm sure that there are some who would disagree with me. But hey, this would be one boring world if everyone agreed with each other.

White Chocolate

Lori mentioned in a comment that I hadn't done any black history facts for the month. Well I found a juicy one for you

Evidently Al Sharpton's great-grandfather was a slave owned by the great-great-grandfather of the late South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond. Senator Thurmond, of course, was known for his support of segregation. Sharpton is one of the biggest civil rights activists of our time.

Hey! Maybe they could be cousins. White slave masters were known to occasionally dip in the chocolate.

Addictive Commercials

I'd be a little scared to buy insurance from this guy. He actually has a whole series of commercials on his website.

We'll Write A Song Of Love

Excuse me while I place my masculinity aside and tell you about the movie I saw this past Thursday.

As a birthday present, I treated a friend to a movie. This person decided they wanted to see "Music And Lyrics". Not the type of movie I would normally spend money to see at a movie theater. But hey, I offered. Not that I didn't think I would like the movie, but it's the type of movie I would normally wait to see on cable.

The Plot: Has-been pop star is hired to write a song for current pop star. While composing, ex-pop star's plant waterer (I know, not a real word) sings her own lyrics to the composition under her breath. Ex-pop star hears this and asks plant waterer to help write song. They write the song, fall in love, and the usual love story cliches follow.

Kinda thin. Nothing too complicated. Not too sappy. I enjoyed it. Hey! This movie was actually right up my alley. It was about love and music composition. I can relate.

I definitely recommend this movie if you are on a date or if you just want something light hearted and funny.

BTW, for the record, there was only one other guy in the theater. The rest of the audience was comprised of mostly teen girls. I felt a little out of place.

I Long To Clear A Path And Lift A Spade

I love my SUV, but between the roof rails and the height, it sucks trying to clean snow off of the roof. And mine isn't even that tall.

Also, my back is in pain today. I shoveled snow in front of the house yesterday, which I haven't done in years. You see, I've lived in an apartment for seven years, so I didn't have to shovel.

A Super Report

Well, here it is. Halftime. Do you remember the rant I posted earlier about how I hate it when they show the Super Bowl commercials on the news during the week before the game. Well so far I have to say that it didn't really matter much this year. I think the commercials so far have been lacking. I chuckled at the Budweiser commercial with Carlos Mencia, and I thought the Chevy commercial with the men washing the car at the intersection was cute, but that was about it. Hopefully that will change in the second half, but I doubt it.

I do have to say that the halftime show was great. That Prince can put on a show. And I respect a performer of his caliber for incorporating a marching band in his show. I love that! Oh, and kudos to those two dancers on stage for dancing around in that heavy rain in those stiletto boots.
