A Super Alternative

Getting tired of the Super Bowl hype? Not a football fan? Well here is an alternative for you, courtesy of Joey. Check out the Puppy Bowl!

Let me tell you what you've been missing!

Animal Planet built a miniature gridiron stadium- complete with cardboard-cut-out spectators. They dump a bunch of dog toys, food and water dishes in the end zones- and then bring the players onto the field. The players are puppies between the ages of 10-15 weeks old- and basically they go nuts playing with each other. There is color commentary, roaring crowd sounds, slo-mo replays, great camera angles (including a camera under the water dish) and a human referee- who throws down penalty flags from time to time.

Plus- there is a half-time show- which I will not spoil here. It is truly funny and unique television. I highly recommend checking it out at some point during the day.

Here's a link to the
Animal Planet website - where you can see this year's players- and vote for the MVP. I voted for Izzie- because he reminds me of a special friend that I once had.

Thanks Joey! I'll be watching this myself.

Are You Ready For Some Ads

Super Bowl week is one of my favorite times of the year. But my post today isn't about the game. I'll talk about that later in the week. Today I want to say something about the ads.

I was a big fan of the Bud Bowl commericials.

I love the Super Bowl ads. Companies seem to bring out their best creativity (and big bucks) for those thirty second spots during the game, and I love it. I do however have a problem with these companies releasing the ads to news organizations before Super Bowl Sunday. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. I was just watching the news and had to change the channel because they were showing all the ads. Part of the fun of watching the game is seeing the ads.

Stop it already!

. . . You Never Go Back

How cool is it that, not only will an African-American coach lead an NFL team into the Superbowl for the first time ever this year, but that both teams have African-American coaches. What's even cooler is that for the first time ever an African-American coach will win the Superbowl . . . Uh . . . Oh . . . Yeah.

Speaking of which, 10 more days until my favorite month.

You're Going To Hollywood

I'm watching American Idol right now (I recorded it earlier in the week).

I still love this show, but I think I'm getting tired of the initial auditions each year. It just seems like a bunch of people trying to get their thirty seconds of fame. I've reached the point where I'd just like to see the legitimate singers in Hollywood.

I also don't feel like they show enough of the legitimate singers during the first auditions. They show a bunch of bad auditions, a couple of good ones, and then at the end they fly through a bunch of singers that made it through that we didn't get to see.

But hey, it obviously brings in the ratings. They have millions of viewers each week. One of which is me.

Please Stay On The Line

I came across this great website today called Who Called Us.

I got a call on my cell from a number I didn't recognize, so I didn't answer. I tried a reverse lookup online, but it came up with nothing. So I decided to google the number and came up with the Who Called website.

It's great because people who have received calls from unknown numbers go on here and log in there experience with the number.

I found out that others had gotten calls from that same number. A couple of people even called the number back and either got a Spanish recording or a disconnected message.

Those Asians Got It Together

I was at the Dixie Bones the other day for a little barbecue. While waiting for my take out, I got to hear a most interesting observation about Asians from one of the employees behind the counter.

"Yeah, those Asians have got it together. They quietly come over to this country and open restaurants and cleaners. Then they build these huge houses . . ." I didn't hear the rest because my food was ready at that point .

I wasn't surprised to hear this woman say this, but I couldn't figure out why. When I got home, I finally remembered why. One day last year I went to get some take-out. Part of my order was a side of collard greens. Now since this is a barbecue place, they ask if you want extra containers of sauce. Well they also offer packets of hot sauce. This same woman actually said to me, "Now I know you want some Texas Pete for your greens. I know how y'all like hot sauce on your greens."

The funny thing is, I had never had hot sauce on my greens before. Now I love it. And all because of that politically incorrect woman.

Do You Want To Ride In My Santa Fe

So, I had a fun evening the other day with my sister who was home for winter break from college. I took her to see a late showing of "Dreamgirls".

Earlier in the evening, she happened to show me her learner's permit. Well I decided to see what she could do behind the wheel. So, after the movie I pulled into a shopping center parking lot near my mom's house and told her to get behind the wheel.

I had to laugh because she was so nervous that she refused to get into the driver seat at first. She had only driven a car once before, and that was a few feet. I was asking her to drive about 1000 feet. She did OK. Under steering, going too slow, breaking hard. But we got home.

It got me thinking though. Maybe it's a girl thing because I remember when I first got behind the wheel, it was like I had been doing it for years. My first time behind the wheel was on a side road during rush hour in driver's ed. class. The instructor said pull onto the road, and I did. And my problem wasn't driving too slow, it was driving too fast.

I guess that came from that young boy fascination with big moving objects like planes and trains and trucks. Whenever I rode in a car, I would watch the driver like a hawk. So it was easy for me the first time I actually drove.

A Moment Of Silence

It's a sad day. Momofuku Ando, the man who invented instant noodles, died yesterday.

I looooooove ramen noodles. I could live off of that stuff. And they cost next to nothing. Of course, they aren't the most healthy food you can eat. But hey, if you want healthy, eat an apple.

BTW, my favorite is the oriental flavor.
